An Apple led to us being deserted in Hobart.
On a cold Saturday in Hobart after the Family Business Association conference, Danielle and I decided to venture out to Willie Smith's Apple Farm as we had been told how wonderful it was by other FBAers.
After about 40 minutes our Uber dropped us at the Apple Farm and said “by the way, Uber doesn’t pick up from out here” and left.
We put the whole 'point of no return’ in the back of our minds and explored the local food stalls outside the Apple Farm.
With market purchases of biltong and dried apple crisps, we confirmed that yes - Uber does not pick up from where we were. The Willie Smith's Cider Makers staff said that there was a regular bus, so no worries :)
The bus schedule showed that it stopped hourly-ish with the next one due in 5 minutes. We casually watched out the window while enjoying the five ciders tasting board, hot mulled apple cider and one of the best apple pies I have in years. We noted with interest that a bus went past - albeit 20 minutes late.
With our bellys full of warm pie and cider we explored the Willie Smith's Apple Museum and made our way to the bus stop - only to find that there is no stop. A staff member confirmed that the bus stop is actually the bit of dirt beside a barn on the side of the road. "Wave them down before they drive past you” she said.
As the sun slowly went lower - taking the temperature with it - and while we were rugging up our jackets and waiting on the dirt by the barn next to the road - a car leaving the Apple Farm stopped, rolled down the window and asked us if we were stuck. We mentioned that while we were currently 'Uber-less’ - we were hopeful to soon be enjoying a warm bus ride back to Hobart.
She said okay and mentioned that "it gets really cold - really quick” once the sun goes down. About 15-minutes later when the thermometer was proving her point, she drove back and handed us a piece of paper with a local cab company phone number and also said to call her personally and she would help us out if we were stuck.
As the sun was finishing up for the day and we were just about to call that cab company - the bus, keeping to it’s 20+ minutes late schedule - crested over the horizon. We happily flagged it down and made our way through a range of country towns en-route to Hobart.
And in there lies the story. While there was hot mulled cider and apple pie - it was the warmness of a Huon Valley local that turned this outing into something really memorable.
So we would like to give a very big shout-out to the young lady from Pure Tasmania Estate (www.puretasmaniaestate.com.au) for your thoughtfulness and concern for two stranded Queenslanders who were trying to keep warm while standing on a bit of dirt beside a barn on the side of the road.
